492,000 LB TRANSFORMER DELIVERY IN IOWA
This video shows the second of two identical transformers that we delivered over 70 miles in central Iowa. They were destined for a new substation being built for the local wind farms. The transformers weighed 492,000 lbs each and were over 19' tall when loaded. Our 18-Dolly Dual-Lane Transporter spread the permitted weight of 838,400 lbs out over both lanes, and the Buckingham SmartSteer® system for the dollies made navigating the corners precise and efficient. At one spot along the route, we had to add in beam extensions and four dollies to cross a bridge and then remove them again on the other side. When we got close to the site, the tight final turns required us to remove eight dollies for a shorter and more versatile wheelbase. Inside the substation, we removed the pull and push trucks and used the self-propelled transporter to maneuver the transformer into place for the off-load. Both deliveries were completed without any issues, ahead of schedule, and within budget.
